Rep. Porter Goss (R-Fla.) chairs the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, a panel that supports giving authorized law enforcement officers the means to immediately decrypt encoded files and communications.

Goss, a former clandestine services officer for the Central Intelligence Agency and former intelligence officer for the U.S. Army, was first elected to Congress in 1988. He has been easily reelected ever since.

The congressman also has served as mayor of Sanibel, in Florida
