Stein is a prominent Washington criminal lawyer who served as independent counsel in the 1984 investigation of former attorney general Edwin Meese III. Former White House intern Monica Lewinsky hired Stein and Plato Cacheris to replace lawyer William Ginsburg in June. Along with Nathaniel Speights, Lewinsky's new legal team represented her in dealings with Whitewater independent counsel Kenneth Starr.

A George Washington University graduate, Stein lists former Oregon senator Bob Packwood (R) among his best-known clients. Stein also served as a defense lawyer in the Watergate investigations. He has taught law and written extensively on trial techniques.
