New Mexico Governor: The Candidates
Gary Johnson (R) | Martin Chávez (D)
Gary King | Ben Chavez | Robert Vigil Jerry Apodaca | Reese Fullerton
Johnson has fought bitterly with New Mexico's Democrat-dominated legislature and has vetoed about 200 bills in his effort to tighten government spending. Johnson owned a construction company and had never held office before he was elected the state's chief executive in 1994. Even before he entered politics, however, Johnson was active in civic boards and children's athletics. Campaign Web site E-mail: info@johnson98.com
Martin Chávez (D)
King, a member of the state House of Representatives, is seeking the opportunity to unseat the man who defeated his father in 1994. His father, Bruce King (D), served three terms as governor and his cousin, David King (D), served as state treasurer in the early 1990s. Campaign Web site E-mail: king98@garyking.org
