Gov. Gary Johnson (R), incumbent
Johnson has fought bitterly with New Mexico's Democrat-dominated legislature and has vetoed about 200 bills in his effort to tighten government spending. Johnson owned a construction company and had never held office before he was elected the state's chief executive in 1994. Even before he entered politics, however, Johnson was active in civic boards and children's athletics.

The first-term Albuquerque mayor has said he would not seek the support of labor unions or run a negative campaign.

Gary King (D)
King, a member of the state House of Representatives, is seeking the opportunity to unseat the man who defeated his father in 1994. His father, Bruce King (D), served three terms as governor and his cousin, David King (D), served as state treasurer in the early 1990s.

Ben Chavez (D)
Chavez is a former state Appeals Court judge.

Robert Vigil (D)
Vigil is now in his second term as state auditor. He first won that office in 1990, and he was reelected in 1994.

Jerry Apodaca (D)
Apodaca won the governorship in 1974, served one term and had virtually dropped out of New Mexico politics until this race.
